... is an extraordinary piece of literature. Being of indeed epic scale, War and Peace offers a detailed look into 19th century Russian aristocracy switching between scenes of everyday life and intriguing accounts of Napoleon's wars and the inherent political circumstances. I for my part enjoyed every single one of the more than 1400 pages. Of particular interest and appeal to me was Tolstoy's idea of historical imperatives and the role of important characters on history's chess board.
The two stars are not about the book but Amazon's mislabeling of the translation. This Kindle edition is now the Anthony Briggs, not the Rosemary Edmonds translation. I have the paperback version of the Anthony Briggs translation and it matches up perfectly with this kindle edition. I really wish Amazon would do a better job of labeling who translates their Kindle editions, different translations can make all the difference in your enjoyment of the book.
Such a classic. Don't give up in the first 10% of the book. Initially you wonder where this is leading but realize that it is setting up characters that play a major role throughout. Also know that this is a history of Russia/France relations during 1805-1813 which includes Napoleon's march to Moscow making it a centerpiece of the novel. It is worth giving yourself a short review of the history of these years and Napoleon's term as Premier of France.Tolstoy brilliantly merges his fictitious characters with these events. However, he also includes actual French and Russian generals and other heads of state that directed the war. I looked them up on Wikipedia to get more insight as to who they were and what role they played in history.Tolstoy's fictitious characters are very interesting and you will find that they change and mature (or not) throughout and so will your opinion of them. At the end there are a couple of epilogues where Tolstoy relates his opinion to history in general and how history is created. Fascinating thoughts from a genius but not easy to comprehend. I held off reading this for years but was so glad to have plunged in. It is a masterpiece.
When starting out to read this, I knew nothing of the plot of War and Peace. (How does one manage that?!) I had never watched any of the mini series or read anything about the plot. I'm glad that I went into it blind because I ended up loving it (well, most of it). I loved reading about the history of the time period and learning about the lives of the fictional aristocracy. Unlike some reviewers, I really enjoyed the war elements of the book as well. They were well written and interesting. Really the only thing I did not enjoy was Part 2 of the Epilogue. It was long and pointless, honestly. I will probably just skip it if I decide to reread War and Peace someday. (Occasionally, Piere's philosophizing on the meaning of life got kind of old, too.) I think I'll celebrate finally reading this classic by watching the miniseries. *(I read the Anthony Briggs translation, which I highly recommend.)
At the outset, I found myself continually asking... Why is this a classic? He (Tolstoy) is just a story teller. A bit wordy, but not really earth shattering. I wondered if something was perhaps lost in the translation. But I slogged on, and on and on... Maybe I should have started with the final prologue (who has more than one prologue?) but, I confess, without the story line, the machinations of men and women, small and great--the conclusions would have lost much of their impact. From and to this current age where it seems that there are no absolutes, his ability to cut through much of the fluff to the underlying truth was actually refreshing.I would recommend this to anyone with time on their hands, a love of reading and a mind open to a different age and and philosophy. In our 30 minute society of instant gratification, few will be so inclined. Ah, such a pity. One final comment... Thank you Kindle! This translation is rife French passages, of which I would have been at a loss without the translation feature. This made for a much richer experience. The vocabulary was at times archaic, words that I was unfamiliar with, and again, Kindle to the rescue. If you plan to read this version, you will appreciate the technology! And now, I can finally claim success, I have read "War and Peace"! 😀
Since amazon is terrible at associating reviews of Kindle editions correctly, this is for the Edmonds version of War and Peace: War And Peace (Penguin Popular Classics)I got this version because it translates most (but not all) of the French into English. Other kindle versions like Pevear & Volokhonsky keep all the translations and footnotes at the end. Unlike the print version, which helpfully puts everything at the bottom of the page, it's too much of an interruption to see some french, jump to the link using the Kindle (I have the basic non-touch version), and then jump back. I do understand some French, but not at the level where using the Kindle version of these other translations of War and Peace make sense for me.Also, it's way cheaper than P&V, which is a bonus. If you're interested in an evaluation of the Edmonds translation vs Pevear-Volokhonsky / , I recommend looking up an article by Liesl Schillinger in the New York Times from October 30, 2007 titled "Says Who"Update: December 2016LJB has pointed out that the links I provided up above now go to a Briggs translation of War and Peace (which I can see for myself is true). When I downloaded the book again to my Kindle, while the cover that is shown is of the Briggs translation, the content when I open the novel is still Edmonds, which is very strange. I've attached some photos :)
